Full at dusk
Nobody has lived at number nine since 1987. The porch light doesn't know that. It comes on at dusk, every evening, and on Halloween a glass bowl appears on the top step, full of full-size bars.
No pennies.
The children take the long way around that house. They have for years. The only kid who ever goes up is always new, or late, or daydreaming, and always comes back down with one bar.
I asked the last one what the bowl was for. She answered with her mouth full, before her mother pulled her off the step: "For the ones who wait."
So I looked it up. In 1987 a boy was hit at the corner on Halloween, walking home in the dark, because every porch light on Bell Street was off that year. Every one. His mother kept hers on after that. When she died, the street kept it on for her.
The neighbors fill the bowl. None of them will say so. They just all, quietly, leave their lights off on Halloween, and leave the good candy at number nine.
I used to think it was a ghost story.
It isn't. It's a bill. Every October the whole street pays it, and a boy who has been walking home in the dark since 1987 gets one more bar and one more lit door.
Also habe ich nachgeschaut.
Nulu ek li koncesos to.
Me pensis dum longa tempo ke to esis fantomo-rakonto.
Ma to esas korekta. Ol esas fakturo.
Nobody has lived at number nine since 1987. The porch light doesn't know that. It comes on at dusk, every evening, and on Halloween a glass bowl appears on the top step, full of full-size bars.
No pennies.
Nequí ha habitat in númere nin desde li annu 1987. Li lúmine del veranda ne save to.
Li infantes prende li long
via circum ti dom. Ili fa to desde annus.
Alor yo serchat. In 1987
un puero esset frappat al crucevia a Halloween, marchante a hem in li
obscuritá, pro que chascun lúmine de veranda in Bell Street esset
extinquet ti annu. Chascun. Su matre lassat li su acendet pos to.
Quande ella morit, li stráda tenet it acendet por ella.
Li vicinos empli li bolle.
Nequi ex ili vole confesser to. Ili omni, quietmen, lassa lor propri
lúmines extinquet a Halloween, e lassa li bon bonbones che número
nin.
Yo pensat que it esset un
historie de fantasmas.
It ne es. It es un factura. Chascun octobre
li tot stráda paga it, e un puero qui ha marchat vers hem in li
